What matters in Wrap

Compact couple position

In a Wrap, the Follow is guided into a more compact position beside or in front of the Lead. The figure changes couple spacing and arm organization at the same time.

From turn and pathway

The wrapped position develops through a prepared turning and traveling pathway. The arms are not subsequently wound around an already stationary partner.

Shoulder space

Connected arms remain within a comfortable range. Elbows and shoulders are not fixed through maximum tightness or additional twisting.

Independent balance

Both dancers retain their own supporting organization in the compact position. A Wrap is not a holding position in which one person carries the other's weight.

Plan the release

The arm pathways remain understandable enough that they can be opened again. A functional Wrap can continue or unwind without forceful repositioning.

04 · Body knowledge

Body organization in Wrap

The wrap develops from travel and rotation

A Wrap develops through an appropriate partner pathway into a compact position beside or in front of the lead. The arms alone do not pull the follow into the wrapped shape.

Both dancers retain personal balance

Even in the closer partner position, each dancer remains organized over personal feet. Proximity does not replace support.

Shoulders and elbows retain space

Arm organization stays compact without trapping the shoulder, elbow, or wrist.

05 · For beginners

Build Wrap clearly first

Practice only the path into the Wrap

Move slowly into the wrapped position and stop there before adding further turns or styling.

Do not shorten distance with the arms

The follow reaches the position through personal steps while the hands accompany and organize the pathway.

Check

Can both dancers stand calmly and make small weight changes in the Wrap without hanging on one another or holding an arm in place?

06 · Teaching and feedback

What to observe in a controlled Wrap

The position develops without pulling

The follow reaches the Wrap through travel and personal balance rather than being pulled into position by the hand or forearm.

Arm space remains available

No shoulder or elbow becomes trapped between the bodies or through hand connection.

An Unwrap is already available

Connection remains organized so the position can be opened again in control.

From Wrap to related movements

Hair Comb

Arm pathway in which a connected hand is guided over one's own or the partner's head and then released into a relaxed position.

Open Break

Both partners create temporary distance through a controlled break while preserving elastic connection through the hands.

Unwrap

Controlled release from a wrap position through opening of the arms and an appropriate counter-rotation or continuation of the follow.

Copa

Linear figure that redirects or checks the follow's forward travel before returning them to the pathway.

Cross Body 360

Advanced linear passage in which the shared orientation is rebuilt through a larger circular rotation while the follow continues to travel through the lane.

Cross Body Lead

The lead opens the pathway and guides the follow through the slot to the opposite side; both finish reoriented toward one another.

Hammerlock

Hand-and-arm position in which a forearm is guided behind the follow's back; the shoulder remains free and the range is kept limited.

Hand Toss

A brief release or redirection of hand connection used to prepare a new hand position without throwing or pulling the partner.

Reverse Cross Body Lead

A cross-body structure using the opposite opening or passing direction from the common basic form.

Mathias Ellmann

Mathias Ellmann

Mathias Ellmann develops the Salsa Movement Lexicon as a connection between dance technique, body knowledge, musicality, learning and partner communication.

Movement is not considered only in terms of which steps or figures are danced, but also how weight, timing, space, perception and connection interact.

Leading and following are treated as reciprocal communication: one person prepares movement possibilities and makes them perceptible, while the other responds through self-organized movement. Both roles remain perceptive, adaptive and autonomous.
