What matters in Cross Body Lead
The Lead reorganizes position to create a clear passage for the Follow through the linear dance space.
The Follow walks through the opened pathway to the opposite side. The pathway is actually traveled rather than replaced by pulling through the connected arm.
While the Follow passes, the Lead also moves and rotates so the lane remains open and a shared couple orientation can be re-established afterward.
Connection communicates direction, timing, and spatial opening. It accompanies the walking pathway without pushing or pulling the Follow sideways through the slot.
After the passage, both dancers reorient toward one another. The Cross Body Lead is complete when balance, spacing, and continuation direction are clear.
04 · Body knowledge
Body organization in Cross Body Lead
The lead organizes personal travel so the follow's line of movement becomes free. An arm action alone is not enough if the body still blocks the pathway.
The follow walks through the opened line using personal weight changes. Connection communicates direction and timing but does not carry the body through the slot.
While the follow passes, the lead reorganizes personal position. At the end, both dancers recover a usable orientation toward one another.
05 · For beginners
Build Cross Body Lead clearly first
Practice only opening, passing, and reorienting with very light connection. The follow should travel through personal steps.
The lead checks that the body actually leaves the passing lane before asking the follow to use it.
Can the follow walk through the open pathway without detouring around the lead or being pulled across the slot by the hand?
06 · Teaching and feedback
What to observe in a controlled Cross Body Lead
The follow receives a genuinely walkable pathway and does not need to leave the line because of the lead's position.
Direction and timing remain readable without arm or hand force replacing the travel pathway.
After the pass, both dancers are organized so the next linear movement can begin without a corrective step.

From Cross Body Lead to related movements
Advanced linear passage in which the shared orientation is rebuilt through a larger circular rotation while the follow continues to travel through the lane.
A cross-body structure using the opposite opening or passing direction from the common basic form.
A cross body lead in which the follow performs an inside rotation while traveling and then returns to the shared line.
A cross body lead with an outward follower turn during the pass, maintaining the linear travel pathway.
Linear figure that redirects or checks the follow's forward travel before returning them to the pathway.
A brief release or redirection of hand connection used to prepare a new hand position without throwing or pulling the partner.
Partner passage in which the follow walks through an opened pathway and the connection is then reorganized.
The lead rotates left, keeping rotational impulse small enough to preserve timing and partner relationship without over-turning.
The lead rotates to the right within salsa timing, coordinating foot placement, spotting, and connection so partner communication remains available.
