What matters in Copa

Linear entry

Copa begins from a linear partner organization. The Follow is first invited forward from the normal pathway while the Lead creates enough space for the redirection that follows.

Check rather than stopping force

Forward travel is briefly checked or redirected. The check comes from early readable connection and body organization rather than from an abrupt pull or push against the Follow.

Independent balance

The Follow retains independent supporting organization during the check. The redirected or briefly stopped pathway should not depend on the Lead carrying the Follow's body weight.

Return to the pathway

After the check, the Follow is redirected into a usable travel pathway. Direction and connection are reorganized early enough for that return.

Resolution

The Copa structure finishes with a clear continuation direction. Depending on the variation, it can resolve through a simple return, an inside turn, or an outside turn.

04 · Body knowledge

Body organization in Copa

Forward pathway and check remain separate tasks

The follow first moves into the offered linear passage. The following direction change is organized so the forward pathway is not replaced by an abrupt pull.

The follow retains personal balance

The checked or redirected position develops through the follow's own foot and weight organization. Connection provides information for the change.

The return pathway needs clear space again

For the resolution, the lead also keeps the new pathway open rather than blocking the return direction with the body.

05 · For beginners

Build Copa clearly first

Walk the Copa pathway first

Practice the forward pathway, checked position, and return direction slowly without an additional turning variation.

Make the check readable early

The lead communicates the change early enough for the follow to organize it through the next weight transfer.

Check

Can the follow change direction through the feet without connection pulling the body backward?

06 · Teaching and feedback

What to observe in a controlled Copa

The initial forward pathway remains free

The follow can enter the Copa structure without being stopped early or pulled sideways out of the line.

The check does not become holding force

Directional information remains clear while the follow keeps personal support organization.

The return pathway is open

Lead position and connection genuinely allow the following return or resolution pathway.

07 · Continue learning

From Copa to related movements

Cross Body 360

Advanced linear passage in which the shared orientation is rebuilt through a larger circular rotation while the follow continues to travel through the lane.

Cross Body Lead

The lead opens the pathway and guides the follow through the slot to the opposite side; both finish reoriented toward one another.

Hand Toss

A brief release or redirection of hand connection used to prepare a new hand position without throwing or pulling the partner.

Reverse Cross Body Lead

A cross-body structure using the opposite opening or passing direction from the common basic form.

Walk Through

Partner passage in which the follow walks through an opened pathway and the connection is then reorganized.

Check Turn

A turn whose rotation is briefly checked or redirected through clear lead information before continuing or resolving.

Mathias Ellmann

Mathias Ellmann

Mathias Ellmann develops the Salsa Movement Lexicon as a connection between dance technique, body knowledge, musicality, learning and partner communication.

Movement is not considered only in terms of which steps or figures are danced, but also how weight, timing, space, perception and connection interact.

Leading and following are treated as reciprocal communication: one person prepares movement possibilities and makes them perceptible, while the other responds through self-organized movement. Both roles remain perceptive, adaptive and autonomous.
