What matters in Inside Double Turn

Two inside rotations

The Inside Double Turn combines two inward Follow rotations within a prepared linear partner organization.

Prepare early

The multiple turn is prepared as such before the main rotation begins. The second rotation is not unexpectedly added after a completed single turn.

Follow carries the axis

The Follow organizes both rotations through personal weight and axis control. The hand pathway communicates direction and continuity without carrying body weight.

Keep the hand pathway quiet

When connected, the leading hand follows a mobile, shoulder-friendly pathway reasonably close to the turning axis. Large arm circles unnecessarily enlarge the rotational track.

Finish the second rotation

Continuation information is reduced in time so the Follow can stabilize balance, line, and continuation direction after the second rotation.

04 · Body knowledge

Body organization in Inside Double Turn

The double inside rotation is prepared in advance

Information for two inward rotations must already be readable before or at the beginning of the turning phase. A second turn is not unexpectedly added after what appeared to be a completed single rotation.

The follow organizes a personal axis

Hand connection can communicate direction and continuation, but it does not carry the follow's body weight.

The hand pathway remains shoulder-friendly

The connected hand travels quietly in an area that allows rotation without pulling the shoulder or elbow outward.

05 · For beginners

Build Inside Double Turn in control first

Begin with one inside rotation

First practice the corresponding single inside rotation with a stable exit while preserving the same spatial and axis logic.

Give double-turn information early

Add the second rotation only when the intention for multiple rotation can be communicated before the turning pathway begins.

Check

Can the follow complete both rotations on a personal axis while the hand connection remains light enough that it is not needed for support?

06 · Teaching and feedback

What to observe in a controlled Inside Double Turn

The second rotation is prepared

The transition from first to second inside rotation appears continuous rather than like a late additional directional impulse.

The hand carries no weight

Connection remains informative without pulling the follow through the turn by the hand or arm.

Continuation reduces in time

Turning information decreases early enough for a controlled finishing orientation after the second rotation.

07 · Continue learning

From Inside Double Turn to related movements

Lead Double Turn

Two self-rotations by the lead within partnerwork while preserving rhythm and the connection needed for the next action.

Outside Double Turn

Two outward follower rotations with a controlled hand pathway and early stabilization of the exit.

Follow Free Turn

Free follower rotation after a clear release impulse, with independent axis control until reconnection.

Inside Turn

A follower turn toward the inside of the shared pathway, typically initiated from a linear pass or cross-body structure.

Turn Check and Exit

Deliberate deceleration of a turn and redirection of rotational momentum into a stable exit or follow-up figure.

Check Turn

A turn whose rotation is briefly checked or redirected through clear lead information before continuing or resolving.

Mathias Ellmann

Mathias Ellmann

Mathias Ellmann develops the Salsa Movement Lexicon as a connection between dance technique, body knowledge, musicality, learning and partner communication.

Movement is not considered only in terms of which steps or figures are danced, but also how weight, timing, space, perception and connection interact.

Leading and following are treated as reciprocal communication: one person prepares movement possibilities and makes them perceptible, while the other responds through self-organized movement. Both roles remain perceptive, adaptive and autonomous.
