What matters in Torso Wave

Footwork and weight

A torso wave does not require a fixed step sequence. A controllable base allows the wave to remain centered in the upper body rather than being replaced by unnecessary whole-body displacement.

Timing

The wave may be a short accent or extend across several counts; its musical placement is not tied to a separate salsa step variant.

Axis

Head and pelvis remain organized so the wave reads primarily through ribcage and spine rather than as a rigid whole-body lean.

Segmentation

The participating ribcage and torso regions move with temporal separation. The pelvis may respond but remains less involved than in a full body roll.

Integration

The segmented pathway reconnects with breath, weight, and music. Range remains only as large as allows the wave to stay continuous and controllable.

Learn a small upper-body wave first

Practice slowly with two or three clearly differentiated torso regions. Let the wave travel sequentially through the upper body; add pelvis, arms, and larger dynamics later.

Can you distinguish the timing of the participating torso regions rather than having them tilt together?

Reminder

Keep the wave small if greater range would require forcing the back or neck into an end position.

Arm Styling Circle

Controlled circular arm pathway through shoulder, elbow, and wrist, phrased musically while keeping the shoulder free.

Body Roll

Segmented body wave initiated by the sternum and upper chest, followed by the ribs and torso and then the pelvis and knees. The segments reach their greatest displacement at different moments, creating a continuous wave rather than a rigid whole-body lean.

Hip Isolation

Deliberate pelvic movement with a comparatively stable ribcage, without obscuring the actual weight distribution through the feet.

Ribcage Isolation

Deliberate shift or rotation of the ribcage while keeping the pelvis comparatively quiet, developing differentiated upper-body control and styling.

Shoulder Isolation

Single or alternating shoulder action performed independently from larger torso and pelvic movement.

Shoulder Shimmy

Fast alternating shoulder isolation: one shoulder moves forward while the other moves back, then both reverse. Rib cage, pelvis and feet remain comparatively quiet so the shimmy reads as shoulder action.

Contra Body Action

Oppositional organization of pelvis and ribcage that dynamically supports turns, walking actions, and partner orientation.

Cuban Body Motion

Coordinated response of feet, knees, pelvis, and torso to complete weight transfer; hip action emerges from loading rather than isolated pushing.

Head Spotting

Coordinated gaze-and-head action in turns: the eyes remain on a reference point as long as practical and quickly reacquire it after rotation.

Movement is not considered only in terms of which steps or figures are danced, but also how weight, timing, space, perception and connection interact.

Leading and following are treated as reciprocal communication: one person prepares movement possibilities and makes them perceptible, while the other responds through self-organized movement. Both roles remain perceptive, adaptive and autonomous.
