What matters in Head Spotting

Footwork and weight

Spotting is not a footwork pattern. The supporting base and rotational impulse come from the relevant turning technique; head and gaze coordinate with that rotation.

Timing

The gaze remains oriented to a spatial reference for as long as practical and is reacquired after the rapid head reorientation. Its timing depends on the particular rotation.

Axis

Head and neck remain organized close to the turning axis. Maximum cervical rotation or violently whipping the head is not a technical goal.

Segmentation

Controlled differentiation of head and torso is central: the head delays relative to the body's rotation and then reorients promptly.

Integration

Spotting can support orientation, rhythm, and the organization of multiple turns, but it does not generate the body's rotational impulse.

Visual reference

A clear spatial reference helps organize gaze orientation before and after the head reorientation.

Head and torso

Head and torso rotate with differentiated timing while the head remains within a controllable cervical range.

Turning axis

The head remains as close to the rotational axis as practical instead of creating extra disturbance through large lateral displacement.

Orientation

After the rapid head reorientation, the chosen visual reference is reacquired promptly.

05 · For beginners

Practice spotting in slow turns first

Begin with small quarter or half turns. Choose a visual reference, maintain it as long as practical, then reorient the head promptly without forcing maximum neck rotation.

Sensing question

Can you reacquire the chosen visual reference after the head reorientation without forcing the neck into maximum rotation?

Reminder

Spotting is not a violent whipping of the head. Reduce speed or range if orientation and cervical control are lost.

Arm Styling Circle

Controlled circular arm pathway through shoulder, elbow, and wrist, phrased musically while keeping the shoulder free.

Body Roll

Segmented body wave initiated by the sternum and upper chest, followed by the ribs and torso and then the pelvis and knees. The segments reach their greatest displacement at different moments, creating a continuous wave rather than a rigid whole-body lean.

Hip Isolation

Deliberate pelvic movement with a comparatively stable ribcage, without obscuring the actual weight distribution through the feet.

Ribcage Isolation

Deliberate shift or rotation of the ribcage while keeping the pelvis comparatively quiet, developing differentiated upper-body control and styling.

Shoulder Isolation

Single or alternating shoulder action performed independently from larger torso and pelvic movement.

Shoulder Shimmy

Fast alternating shoulder isolation: one shoulder moves forward while the other moves back, then both reverse. Rib cage, pelvis and feet remain comparatively quiet so the shimmy reads as shoulder action.

Torso Wave

Wave-like action primarily through ribcage and spine, with less pelvic involvement than a full body roll.

Contra Body Action

Oppositional organization of pelvis and ribcage that dynamically supports turns, walking actions, and partner orientation.

Cuban Body Motion

Coordinated response of feet, knees, pelvis, and torso to complete weight transfer; hip action emerges from loading rather than isolated pushing.
