What matters in Half Turn

Approximately 180 degrees

A Half Turn changes body orientation by approximately 180 degrees. Starting and finishing directions are therefore clearly distinguishable.

Organize weight clearly

The participating steps or pivot actions clearly accept weight. Rotation does not come from simply twisting the upper body.

Control the axis

The body center remains over a usable supporting organization during rotation. Lateral collapse makes a precise finish harder.

New orientation

After the half turn, gaze and body direction are clearly changed relative to the start. This new orientation is actively stabilized.

Avoid over-turning

Rotational impulse is reduced in time so the movement finishes near the intended half revolution rather than requiring a correction afterward.

Body organization in Half Turn

The new orientation is the main goal

A Half Turn changes body orientation by approximately 180 degrees. The priority is therefore a clear new facing and movement direction rather than maximum rotational speed.

Weight carries the direction change

The weighted foot or planned weight sequence organizes the turn and establishes the new supporting side afterward.

End rotation in time

Because only half a revolution is required, rotational energy must reduce early enough to prevent the body from passing the target direction.

Choose a clear starting and finishing direction and practice only the change between those two orientations first.

Learn to stop slowly

Turn deliberately slowly and finish exactly when the new direction is reached.

Hook Turn

Turn in which one foot crosses behind or in front of the base and the crossed position is used to continue rotation.

Left turn performed mostly on the spot with compact stepping, organized axis, and controlled finish.

Pivot Turn

Turn using one or more pivot actions in which body orientation is redirected over weighted feet.

Right Spot Turn

Right turn performed mostly on the spot, using a compact foot base and head spotting to support spatial orientation.

Mathias Ellmann

Mathias Ellmann develops the Salsa Movement Lexicon as a connection between dance technique, body knowledge, musicality, learning and partner communication.

Movement is not considered only in terms of which steps or figures are danced, but also how weight, timing, space, perception and connection interact.

Leading and following are treated as reciprocal communication: one person prepares movement possibilities and makes them perceptible, while the other responds through self-organized movement. Both roles remain perceptive, adaptive and autonomous.
